Self-Guided Holidays and Small Group Adventures Europe:  Germany

Rising dramatically from the rolling hills of southern Bavaria, the Bavarian Alps are both spectacular and inspiring and a magnificent setting for a walking holiday of Bavaria. The Berchtesgaden National Park was founded in 1978 and spreads over 210 sq km of the Berchtesgadener Land’s southern tip. It contains five main mountain ranges and the scenic expanse of the Königssee, Germany’s highest (602m), deepest (190m) and cleanest lake. The Königssee was originally designated as a plant reserve in 1910 due to the variety of flora surrounding it.

The lake curls around the mighty Watzmann range, with the peak of Jenner (1,874m) at its end.  It is a beautiful place to escape the crowds and enjoy a hike or walk.  One third of the park is rocky and glaciated, with a further third covered in mixed woodlands of spruce, beech, fir and other conifers. Elsewhere are alpine pastures and expanses of low scrub.

Alpine regions are home to wildflowers – orchids, cyclamen, gentians, pulsatilla, alpine roses, edelweiss and buttercups. We urge our travellers to stick to the paths, especially in alpine areas where ecosystems are fragile.

The mighty Danube River originates in Germany and there is no better way to enjoy the European Union's longest river than with a boat and barge holiday down the Danube.

Utracks Europe offers a range of guided and self-guided tours to help you cycle, walk, hike, boat and barge your way through Germany on a small group adventure holiday.
